“I paint flowers so they will not die” – Frida Kahlo.
A birthday fiesta with bright, bold colours is the inspiration for our September theme and what better way to welcome Spring 2018, than with a floral Frida Kahlo celebration?
Little Ava shares her birthday with Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and having a creative mommy who used to be an art teacher herself, made this theme just perfect. Read all about Ava and her mommy Mari-Louise on the blog, Just a Mama.
The Candiotes’ beautiful home in Pretoria with lots of space and a big backyard, was transformed into a Mexican playground for the little niños.
Planner & Stylist:
Natja-Reney Lifestylist squeezed the lime into this fiesta by styling it with the most colourful paper creations, fresh fruit and flowers creating a vibrant table setting and multiple desert areas. NR Creative Group sourced and installed all the decor, linen and furniture and handcrafted Ava’s gorgeous flower crown.
Cakes & Treats:
Sweetly Detailed created both of the cakes and all of the treats. The first cake covered in white fondant with bright tassels was unquestionably the focus of the room. The second cake had a floral element, handpainted with buttercream icing and was used to end the day with a fun family cake smash session. The treats included a variety of macaroons, dark chocolate mouse cups, flower lollipops, petit fours, cake popsicles, royal icing cookies and mini doughnuts.
Food & Drinks:
No Mexican fiesta can go without a splash of lime and a scoop of guacamole. For lunch, mommy Mari-Louise made a self-service Taco bar with the option of a chicken, beef or bean filling and to top it all off salsa, roasted peppers, jalapenos, fresh guacamole, sour cream and lots of cheese could be added. She also prepared another Mexican favourite, corn on the cob as a side dish.
In true Frida Kahlo spirit, each of the little guests got to paint a self-portrait. Mari-Louise got pictures (side profile) of each child and traced their silhouettes onto vinyl, which she then stuck onto canvases. The little artists then painted the backgrounds of their canvases and once dried the vinyl was pulled off, leaving a clear silhouette surrounded in splashes of bright colour.
Photography & Videography:
The Poppit and Finch team joined in the celebrations by capturing the entire fiesta on photo and video.
